In this work, the artist takes an analytical look at the city as he invites the viewer to examine what lies beyond the visible, the inner dynamics and infrastructure of the constituents of his compositions. In this photograph from the series 'Nothing Surprising', the iron bars coming out of the concrete floor are presented to the viewer scattered and bent, separated from their vertical form unlike how they should appear. As such, it makes both the existing infrastructure and the structure to be built on this infrastructure open for a discussion.

About the Artist:

Ali Taptık took on photography in his high school years. His first two photograph series are “Remembering Me” and “Kaza ve Kader” (Accident and Destiny), the common feature of which is that they both take a look at Istanbul from the perspective of personal stories. These series were followed by “Familiar Strangers”, which explores the relationship between public space and urban subjects. The artist likes working on different series concurrently, exploring figureless spaces we encounter day to day from a different perspective in his photographs.  Approaching buildings, structures, and 'things' as if approaching a human, Taptık interacts with them by means of their moods in his photographs. Having placed city-human relationships at the center of all his photograph series since the beginning of his artistic life, Taptık takes an analytical look at the city as he invites the viewer to examine what lies beyond the visible, the inner dynamics and infrastructure of the constituents of his compositions. The artist’s photographs are a testimony of the legacy of people, what they leave behind once they are gone.
