In her work “No Money, No Water”, which consists of handwritten folio letters on a plate, Elmas Deniz points out a big problem with a brief and striking phrase. Drawing from the commercialization of main sources of life, she places an emphasis on the transformation of water from what once was easily accessible to everyone for free into a phenomenon that can be purchased. In doing so, she aims to open a discussion on the ownership of common resources and the effect of the political-economic system on these resources and hence on people.

About the Artist:

Pursuing her art production in Istanbul, Elmas Deniz is a concept-driven visual artist. Her works investigate the intersections and points of entanglement between economics and nature.  The capitalism-led deterioration of nature and the related consumerist culture are the central concepts in Deniz's practice. She focuses on the human-nature relationship, the idea of nature throughout history, and ecological concerns. Her works critically expose the faults of the system and occasionally propose alternative possibilities. The form-content interplay and the attempts to adapt the form to the concept define her choices. Hence, she works with a broad array of media, including installation, sculpture, video, drawing, and writings.
